A WALK WITH GOD AT THE WALKWAY
Have you visited the island born of fire? How about the land of the sweet lanzones?
If not, duma ki ta Camiguin.
Our place, the volcanic island of Camiguin, is the smallest province in northern Mindanao. The seven volcanoes make the island oftentimes visited with thousands of tourist each year.
Local and foreign tourists are responsible for making the island more attractive to others. Their wonderful and memorable experiences make them realize that Camiguin really means “Come Again”.
Despite the advancement of technology and a bulk of tourist who come and go to our island, Camiguin maintains its uniqueness and mystery. The island is a paradise because of its natural beauty: scenery, beaches, volcanoes, tourist spots, sweet lanzones and most of all the hospitable people. Government officials and Non-governmental organizations work hand-in-hand in preserving and protecting the environment. Seminars and workshops are conducted to educate the people particularly the school children and teachers. I was one of the beneficiaries.
Enigmata, PRRM, and CCRMP, to name a few, are some of the many institutions who have been helping us in preserving and conserving the natural beauty of nature. Activities include tree planting, beach clean-up, info drive, symposia, and many others. Enigmata is also responsible for sending teachers and students to be trained not only in the Philippines but also abroad.
Camiguin celebrates many festivities. This includes the PANAAD. Panaad letteraly means “promise”. Local and foreign tourists are excited to participate in this event. Hiking around the island is not only meeting new people, watching beautiful sceneries but also a great way to escape the monotony of the gym and get a heart-pumping workout.
There are many benefits of hiking. Actually the reason why I always participate in this activity simply because it makes me physically fit and healthy. The most common benefits are: weight loss, decrease in blood pressure, helps prevent osteoporosis by improving bone density, relieves back pain, and most of all doesn’t cost much. My participation made me realized that this is not only a religious activity but also a good form of exercise. Hiking around the island is worth burning calories. Sixty four kilometers along the highway and about a kilometer uphill will complete your panaad.
The heart of panaad is the WALKWAY. You can find station of the cross in this place. Walkway is located at barangay Bonbon in the town of Catarman.
At the slopes of Mt. Old Vulcan, statues reflecting the life of our Lord at Calvary can be seen. On our way uphill we can feel the cool breeze made possible because of the presence of trees. These trees are the result and pruduct of the tree planting activities.
People come and go but the experience they have will not be forgotten as soon as they are alive.
Want to lose weight while practicing your religious belief? Then, duma ki ta Camiguin. I am sure the experience they have will be yours too…
